Vancouver Island Marmot (Marmota vancouverensis) is listed as Critically Endangered because in 2016 it was estimated that there were between 90-130 individuals occurring in two subpopulations in the wild. Its area of occupancy is less than 10 km², and there has been extensive clear cutting of its forest habitat. A population reduction of greater than 30% over the past three years has occurred, indicating a larger population decline over the generation length (~ 4-5 years). Additionally both subpopulations have fewer than 50 individuals.
