Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina) is considered Vulnerable because it is documented as rare with a total population estimated to be less than 10,000, it has a fairly small area of occurrence, and no subpopulation is estimated to contain more than 1,000 individuals; there is an ongoing decline in the number of individuals, due to ongoing habitat degradation and loss, and incidental take. Maximum reproductive potential in other box turtle subspecies is around 7-11 eggs/female/year, and maturity at five to eight years; values may be lower because of its shorter active season. In the absence of quantitative data, it qualifies at least for Vulnerable A2bc, A4bc, B2ab(iii) and/or C2a(i).
